Triumph and Turmoil – Cook Straits Oceans 7 Number 5 Completed:

A Battle Against Nature’s Fury & Unforgiving New Zealand Waters

After an arduous and humbling journey, completing my fifth leg of the Oceans 7 – swim across the challenging Cook Strait. I am overwhelmed with emotion as I sit down to share the incredible journey of completing my swim across the formidable Cook Strait – a challenge that pushed me to the very limits of physical and mental endurance.

This 36-kilometer odyssey took me through some of the most relentless, chaotic, and bone-rattling ocean conditions I have ever encountered. No words can truly capture the mix of emotions and physical strain experienced during those 10 hours and 48 minutes.

The Crew – Unsung Heroes of the Ocean Odyssey

Such endeavors are never solitary feats. Behind every stroke, every surge forward, stood a stalwart support crew whose unwavering dedication and unwavering support propelled me through the darkest depths of uncertainty.

To Andrew, Michelle, and Ralph – your dedication, resilience, and unwavering support in treacherous conditions will forever be etched in my heart. Your camaraderie during the emotional highs and lows created memories that transcend a mere swim.

Captain Grant of Katabatic Charters, your control and guidance in the unpredictable oceans were beyond extraordinary. Your navigational prowess in hair-raising conditions was a true testament to your courage and oceanic expertise.

The journey unfolded in four distinct stages, each presenting its own set of trials and tribulations. From the disorienting chaos of the initial leg to the relentless onslaught of the mighty Cook Strait, every moment tested the bounds of human resilience. Yet, amidst the tumult, messages of love and encouragement from cherished family and friends served as beacons of hope, fueling the fire within to press onward

In the heart of adversity, as the ocean threatened to engulf both body and spirit, I unearthed reserves of strength I never knew existed. Engaging in a silent battle against the demons of doubt and despair, I tapped into the primal essence of the warrior spirit, harnessing its untamed power to defy the odds. With every stroke, I embraced the legacy of my Dad , drawing strength from their indomitable resolve.

The Four Stages of Triumph

1. The Start Eye Opener:

The early morning start in 13-degree water was a shock to the system. Navigating alongside a boat in the dark, disoriented by the messy chop, and occasional bumps from unseen creatures – it was a challenging beginning. Dolphins, thankfully, made an appearance, uplifting the spirits.

2. Into the Bumpy, Choppy Washing Machine:

As the sun rose, I found a rhythm, only to be disrupted by the mighty Cook Strait’s tumultuous waters. It felt like the ocean was determined to crush every stroke and rhythm. My crew kept me hydrated and motivated as we faced the challenging middle stage.

3. Battling the Mighty Ocean and Inner Demons:

Low points came, and the tide turned away from the coastline. I felt stagnant, as if the land was being pulled away. Deep discussions with myself ensued, battling inner demons. The support messages from family and friends were my lifeline, and every stroke became a testament to strength and perseverance.

4. Towards the End:

Weather turned for the worse with strong currents and winds, making feeding difficult. Pushing against the underwater volcanic shelf felt like swimming uphill, currents intensified, With a team as determined as a wolf pack, we fought against the odds, pointed towards the lighthouse, and broke the relentless forces.

The last 200 meters were a grueling fight of 45 minutes , this lead to the final victory against the relentless forces of nature.

Lessons from the Depths

This swim, a relentless challenge, taught invaluable lessons:

1. Never Take Things for Granted:

Nature’s unpredictability demands respect.

2. Assumptions Can Break You:

Stay adaptable; assumptions can be your downfall.

3. You Have More in Your Tank:

When you think you’re depleted, you’ve only just begun.

4. Find Your Inner Warrior:

Tap into that wolf spirit, that resilience within.

5. Never Give Up on Your Dreams:

The hardest battles are the ones worth fighting for.

6. Great Things Come with Large Effort:

  Nothing worthwhile is easily attained.

7. Power of Breathing and Positive Thoughts:

Control your thoughts; keep the gremlins at bay.

8. Surround Yourself with the Right Crew:

A supportive team makes all the difference.

9. Always keep moving forward

Never ever give up

10. Follow Your Lighthouse:

Your guiding light will lead you home.
